We had a pretty nice Thanksgiving. I forgot to take my camera to my parents house. Ugh. But, here are some pictures of Ellie’s preschool Thanksgiving feast which took place the Monday before Thanksgiving.

The feast:
Ellie ate corn, a roll and drank Pilgrim’s punch. After the feast, Ellie played with her classmate’s little sister. In this little pool, the children practice their ripping and cutting skills.
Thomas mastered the drinking fountain. “Here’s how you take a drink, Ellie.”

After school, Ellie went to a Little Flowers meeting. LF is basically the Catholic version of Brownies or Daisies or whatever 4/5 yo girls do. Ellie is definitely one of the youngest in the class. Her Aunt Amy is the leader so she feels comfortable.

On this day, they listened to a nun talk about St. Cecilia. After, they practiced Christmas Carols. During Advent, they will go to a nursing home and sing.

While Ellie was at LF, Thomas played basketball in the gym.

In gratitude for…. November 22, 2007

  • God. I have spent a lot of time lately in prayer. I’m so grateful for the peace that can only come from God’s love.
  • My husband. Andy is not perfect. But, he is perfect for me. He is a wonderful husband and I always know that he loves me.
  • My children. There was a time in my life where I thought that I would never have children. Now, I’m blessed with two challenging, but so loving children. (Thomas just had a tantrum because I would not allow him to wake up his sister.)
  • The rest of our family. My children have wonderful grandparents, a great Aunt Amy, Uncle Jesse and a bunch of cousins that love them very much. My brother struggles so much with his life, but I’m grateful that he is my brother. He has taught me much, even if it is what not to do. I must not forget Great Grandma Hilliard and Great Grandma O’Brien! We love them so much!
  • Andy and I have also have some wonderful aunts, uncles, and cousins. We cherish the memories that we have shared with them even thought we don’t get to see them often. (And, those secret surprise marriages are pretty cool too!) I have to express my gratitude for my Aunt Laura’s health this year. She is cancer free right now and I’m so happy for her. She set a beautiful example of fighting cancer. I imagine she had some pretty difficult moments, but she always had a positive attitude when I saw her. She handled her mother’s death and a stem cell transplant right after with such grace. Aunt Laura, I hope I don’t ever have to battle cancer. But, if I do, your example has taught me much. Thank you.
  • Friends. We have great friends who celebrate and cry with us. Friends are the family that we choose and I’m grateful to have found some great ones.
  • Our house, cars and the rest of the material things that make life comfortable.

Happy Thanksgiving! God bless!

Bedtime these days… November 13, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — teresalj @ 2:33 am

Ellie is getting ready for bed. Isn’t she sweet? She is handling this oh so well.
How do we comb a two year old’s hair with a nit comb? First, spray tea tree oil & water onto his hair.
Second, let him spray you with the hose.
Then, let him play in the water while you put mayonnaise in his hair. Then, comb through the splashes. Fun for all.

Then, when it is all done, try to relax.

(We don’t believe that Thomas has lice. But, I am not taking any chances.)

Eradicating the lice 101…. November 12, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — teresalj @ 2:19 pm

Compiled from many web sites, my sister in law, and my friends…ok mostly from my sister in law. Anyway, after research, here is what I am doing:

(I’m writing this down so that I know what to do in the future.)

1. Use the OTC cancer in a box. You have a variety of brands…NIX or RID are the most common. We used RID because it was a little less toxic than NIX, but RID does not kill the eggs. I’m starting to wish that we would have used the NIX. Oh well…live and learn. Make sure you put the shampoo on dry hair. Water will water down the potency and the lice probably won’t die. The shampoo will suffocate the live lice. Leave on for 10 minutes. If you leave it on longer, it is too toxic for the skull. Some people say to leave it on longer for good measure. Whatever. That’s too dangerous. Anyway, then add some water, lather it up and rinse it out.

2. Put on some sort of gel, oil, or conditioner and comb through the hair to get rid of the snarls. The first time, I used the RID stuff. I’m not going to do that anymore. I’m just going to use the TTO conditioner. It’s not so toxic.

3. Use one of the lice combs and comb through each strand of hair. Wipe off the comb often. You need to remove every last egg. Some of the lice won’t be dead, but will come off with the comb. They will die soon..they are just resistant to the shampoo. If the hair starts to dry, put more gel or conditioner on. That will help comb through each strand.

4. Clean your house..wash everything on high heat and vacuum everything. Stuffed animals, dress up clothes, dolls with fake hair have to be frozen or put in the dryer on high heat for 20 minutes. If either of these aren’t possible, seal it up in a bag for a couple of weeks. (We are washing bedding daily on high heat.)

6. Go to your health food store. Buy apple cider vinegar, tea tree oil conditioner and tea tree oil.

7. Put a couple of table spoons of TTO into a spray bottle with water. You can spray your furniture, mattresses, pillows with this. (This repels fleas also.)

Daily until you are sure the eggs and lice are gone:
Sleep with TTO conditioner on the hair. Ellie is sleeping with a shower cap on too. In the morning, rinse with warm water. Then, rinse the hair with a mixture of equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and water. Leave on for five minutes then rinse with warm water. The vinegar helps to loosen the eggs. Then, once again, comb hair with the nit comb. You can dip the comb in the cider/water mixture as you comb also. Spray the hair with TTO/water mixture and then you may leave the house.

The first few nights that you sleep without the TTO conditioner, you may want to spray the hair with TTO/water mixture.

If you don’t have lice, but want to prevent it:
Use TTO conditioner at least once a week. You can also put a tsp. of TTO into your regular shampoo. Spray your hair, car, furniture with TTO/water regulary. Rinse your hair with apple cider once a week and leave in for 5 minutes. (We will be doing this to Ellie and Thomas every week during the school year, I think.)

If none of this works:
I read that some of the medicated dandruff shampoos can help. Neem oil can be added to the TTO mixture. Go on vacation for a few days. (If there are no heads in your house, the lice can’t live).

We can’t go on vacation. But, we are going to try every other option before using the prescription stuff. I may be obsessing about this. But, I want these critters gone. Ugh.

One last thing..
I ordered a product called Neon Nits. Apparently, that turns the eggs pink by spraying it on the hair.

Ugh… November 12, 2007

Filed under: Uncategorized — teresalj @ 12:02 am

Lice..that’s right. Ellie has lice. YULK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, she has been treated and she just had a few. So, I’m hoping they don’t move into our house permanently. I couldn’t sleep last night. As if it isn’t enough to put that pesticide cancer in a box stuff directly onto my daughter’s scalp, we have to leave it there for 10 minutes…just to soak right in. And, apparently, if you google at all, you quickly learn that a lot of these critters are resistant to the OTC cancer in a box. Then, you have to get a prescription for something even more potent. Ugh. Yulk!!!!!! So, we are going to avoid that at all costs. Ellie and I are sleeping in some tea tree oil conditioner tonight. I do not have any lice, by the way. But, Ellie is sick of dealing with these critters so I told her that I would do it too. We will be rinsing with some apple cider vinegar on a regular basis. Hopefully, with some preventative measures, a lot of laundry and some vacuuming, we can say good bye to these bugs.

Let me tell you, by the way, that this lice is everywhere this year. Apparently it is a bad lice year, maybe due to the warm fall. So, we will be doing some preventative stuff for quite some time. My head itches just by thinking about it.

Now, I’m not proud of the fact that we have lice here. But, I’m posting about it just to vent, really. And, it doesn’t mean that we are dirty. Lice does not discriminate…it will take any head that it has access to.

Luckily Thomas has been spared.

Go on. Go check your kids. If they are around any other kids at all, they might have lice.
